Hike the world's deepest canyon

Colca Canyon is twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. This Arequipa region adventure combines trekking, wildlife watching for Andean condors, and traditional Incan terracing still used by local communities.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1: Depart Arequipa early morning, drive to Colca Canyon rim via Puno highlands, stop at observation points, visit traditional villages (Chivay), soak in natural hot springs (Caleras).

Day 2: Early morning at Condor viewing point (Cruz del Condor) to watch giant Andean condors riding thermal currents. Trek into canyon, explore terraced farms still maintained by local communities, interact with Collagua and Cabana peoples.

Day 3: Optional canyon-bottom trek with swimming in natural pools, explore geyser areas (Pumareque), return to Arequipa via scenic viewpoints. Option for longer 3-day trekking alternative.

Wildlife & nature

Spot Andean condors with 10-foot wingspans, see Andean eagles, explore geological formations, visit thermal hot springs, and witness how locals have terraced the canyon walls for 1,000+ years.

Cultural immersion

Meet Collagua and Cabana indigenous groups maintaining ancient agricultural traditions. Learn about their textiles, traditional dress, and how they've adapted to canyon life for centuries.

Practical notes

Starting altitude 11,155 ft (3,400 m). Temperatures: 50-70°F daytime, 32-45°F nights. Bring layers, sun protection, and water. Some sections are steep - moderate to good fitness required.
